Athletics involves the basic human movements of running, jumping and throwing. An extensive set of rules in each discipline makes individual performances comparable and measurable.
The athletic disciplines are the heart of the Olympic Games:
Sprint: 100m, 200m, 400m.
Middle distance: 800m, 1000m, 1500m.
Long distance: 3000m, 5000m, 10000m.
Relay: 4x100m, 4x400m, 3x800m (W), 3x1000m (M).
Hurdles: 100m (W), 110m (M), 400m.
Walking: 20km, 50km.
Jump: High Jump, Pole Vault, Long Jump, Triple Jump.
Throw: Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, Javelin.
Combined events: Heptathlon, decathlon.
For children and youth, running disciplines are offered with an age appropriate reduced scope. For example, sprint distances are 50 meters and 75 meters.
Athletics is a mostly individual sport that is characterized by the motto “faster, higher, further.” Besides a focus on individual performance, relays and team competitions introduce cooperation and a team spirit to the sport. Accordingly, athletes will learn social skills such as mutual consideration, helpfulness and fairness.
The Athletics Department of PSV Neuss aims in particular to promote a harmonious physical sense of well-being, the development of individual self-confidence and a professional sports education in all participants. Athletes are individually catered to and supported according to their needs and talents. In athletics, performance orientation and talent development are just as possible in athletics who do not participate in competitions as in athletes who do participate in competitions.
